Mechanical Engineering is a core engineering discipline which is the most sought after branch by students. The Department of Mechanical Engineering in Mehr Chand Polytechnic College has been recognized for its high quality education over the last seven decades. The branch is concerned with design, fabrication, installation and operation of engines and machines, manufacturing processes, industrial setups.
We strive to create an environment in the department which is conducive to sincere studies as well as for the development of overall personality of the young students by inculcating in them the healthy habits, ethical values, cultural outlook & co-operative spirit, so that after completion of their course they not only become good technocrats but also good citizens. Possessing a high degree of integrity and sincerity and being in a position to contribute to the society and carve a niche for them for a successful and bright professional career, bringing good name to the department and institutes are some of its main vision planks.
The course aims at developing practical & theoretical knowledge in different subjects of mechanical engineering and also basic knowledge of other subjects like Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, and Computer Applications etc. so as to enable the students to cope up with the latest trends of computerization and mechatronics.
Besides academic inputs, the development of dignity of labour, safety at work stations, spirit of teamwork, quality consciousness and positive attitude are other missions of the department.

To develop industrial linkages in order to provide clarity of technical concepts and quality education and to produce engineers who can compete in the global market by constantly training the faculty to ensure up to date dissemination of knowledge to the students and self.

The department understands the importance of inculcating the spirit of innovation among the students. In the major projects, students are encouraged to bring out new ideas or to improve the existing technologies so that ideas can be given a practical shape.
Every year students do bring out something new with a bang. This has not only improved their R&D skills but also has been taken as an additional parameter for visiting companies.

Talking about placements, the students have capitalized on the reputation of this prestigious institute and have managed to get them well placed in reputed organizations including manufacturing, textile, automobile and marketing sectors. Only during the last three years, over fifty students have been placed in the industries related to the above mentioned sectors. In addition to this our students have managed to find a place in various public sector undertakings like BHEL, GREF, BARC, PWD, NTPC, NHPC, Maruti Udyog Ltd. & Indian railways etc.

Apart from getting a responsible job in a reputed company the students after passing this three year diploma programme can also enhance their qualification.
- Direct admission to 2nd year (lateral entry) of BE / B Tech in Mechanical Engineering of various universities.
- They can pursue AMIE from Institution of Engineers.
- Some concerns have got collaborations with BITS Pilani to offer part time / Distance learning programmes of Bachelors and / or Masters level for students working with them.
Future plans
The department of mechanical engineering plans to set up High Tech. Labs for its budding engineers with assistance from AICTE and other organizations. The department as a team feels that there is a great need for inculcating the spirit of devotion, dedication and above all innovation among the students. The department pledges to bridge the gap between the new technologies and the learning brains of the students.
We as a team are working to uplift the standards of technocrats under development, by providing them with proper guidance, healthy criticism and boosting their confidence. We plan to produce such quality of engineers who could pave their own way towards their goals when it comes to innovative and creative ideas.
